40 Faces in 40 Days

We see people every day, but do we really see them? I mean, all the details that make them who they are? That make them beautifully flawed, beautifully imperfect—beautifully human?

There is nothing wrong with looking skin deep. In fact, we need to learn to accept all the differences, all the variables, all the flaws, textures and proportions in each face and in each body if we are to understand what true beauty is.

If we would look at people without judgement and comparison, but rather with admiration for the intrinsic beauty in their details, I think we would start to see them as God sees them, as God sees us.

If we accepted our own differences, and forego all the unnecessary competitive comparisons with others, I think we would cease looking in the mirror only to find what we could improve with make-up, chemicals and surgery.

My own face bears many marks from the past. I used to look at my face so often that I always found something to pick at. Now, years later I have the marks to prove it.

Through the years, I have learned to accept and love myself both physically and spiritually. I am still a work in progress, but have found that as I have learned to love and accept myself, even with all my imperfections, I have, along the way, learned to love and accept all others the same.

This was one of the very first pictures I took of my bedhead for this site. It was the day I decided to celebrate my true beauty, as well as my life as a hard-working mother.

It has opened my eyes and given me the vision to help others see themselves too.

If only through my lens for now, I hope you will see how beautiful every person is.

Just look a little closer and you will.

Starting July 10, 2013

My challenge is to photograph
40 Faces in 40 Days.
Focusing on girls ages 5 and up

Then starting August 20, 2013 I will post one face a day.

No names, just a face without make-up and a simple question, “What do you see?”

But of course I can’t stop there.

There will also be a challenge of the day.

My hope is that it will allow you to look deeper into the issues and insecurities we have about beauty.

My hope is that it will open your eyes, but more specifically, your mind and your heart to really see all people for their many variations, details, flaws and imperfections.

It is hard to see the beauty we all posses within if we can’t even accept and love that which is without.

  1. Benae (my daughter) just turned 5. You could use her as one of your 40 faces. I’ll volunteer too, if you really need me. I’m just a bit insecure to be photographed without makeup because my eyebrows are thinning and I have to use eyebrow pencil as to not look so weird. Plus, I could stand to lose 40 lbs. So I kind of struggle with feeling beautiful right now.
I always looked at you as a gorgeous woman. I can’t believe you would think differently than that. Nice photos!

    • Melissa, I wish I was headed out to Eagle Mountain in the near future, but being up in Kaysville I am not! However, I hope you will take the challenge and Look Closer for 40 Days at the women who will be posted. I hope that it will give you encouragement you need to feel beautiful no matter what! Because you are!

I used to be a lot more insecure and critical of myself in my younger years, and would lie if I said that there aren’t days that I still struggle, but I have come a long way.

Anyway, thanks for being willing! Make sure to follow the blog or facebook page and let me know what you think about the project as it unfolds!

      Much Love!
